Calcium Carbide Moisture Test
An extra service for the assessment of moisture content within your screed floors.
Overview
The calcium carbide method is highly precise and dependable for moisture testing, offering insights not only into surface moisture levels but also into moisture content within the screed up to 50% of its thickness.
How we Test
On-site, a portable system comprising a vessel with a pressure gauge and a weighing scale is utilized for the calcium carbide test. A sample of the installed screed is extracted from approximately half of its depth. This sample is meticulously weighed and placed into a vacuum flask along with a reagent, thoroughly mixed, causing the free moisture to react with the reagent, releasing acetylene gas and increasing pressure in the flask. The pressure rise corresponds directly to the amount of free moisture, with readings displayed on the pressure gauge as CM%.
Why should you Test?
Despite general drying time guidelines for various screeds, actual drying times can differ based on factors like screed composition, depth, and environmental conditions. Prematurely laying the final floor finish before the screed has adequately dried can lead to issues such as dampness, vinyl rippling, mold, and costly flooring replacement. Conducting a precise moisture assessment at the end of the drying period ensures the screed is sufficiently dry for the final floor finish, safeguarding both the screed's quality and the flooring's durability while averting expensive remedial actions stemming from moisture-related problems.
